“Subtle Sin and Healing”
E. Michal Gayer
“For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” (Romans 8:13)

A lot of good people, who do not lie, cheat, steal or commit immoral acts are still permitting the law of sin and death to operate in their lives through subtle sin like spiritual laziness of the mind, neglecting the study and assimilation of God’s Word, failing to develop strong faith, failing to develop an active prayer life and neglecting to be diligent in love. Other subtle sins come in the form of chronic fear, worry and anxiety; unresolved anger, unforgiveness, resentment and bitterness; excessive guilt, self-hatred and self-rejection, as well as doubt, lack of trust and double-mindedness toward God’s Word. These subtle, less obvious sins, and their underlying stress, can interfere with and even prevent healing. Subtle sin, just as much as overt obvious sin, can be the underlying seeds causing and prolonging many forms of sickness and disease.
For many people the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus pulls them up one way, but with the intrusion of sin, especially subtle sin, the law of sin and death pulls them down again another way. The entire Bible acts as a warning against sin and its destructiveness. We must become ever aware of our need to avoid sin in our lives. It is crucial that people receive the good news that Jesus Christ has provided the way out of the clutches of sin and its partners, sickness and disease. He secured healing at the cross as a redemptive blessing and now lives to enforce everything He died to accomplish.
When Jesus was raised from the dead, He assumed a vital role on behalf of people. He is now seated at the right hand of the Father where He reigns as Savior of all mankind. He is actively the Mediator of the New Covenant that was ratified in His blood. He is the Great High Priest of our confession. He is our Intercessor before the Father and He is our Advocate who is continually, through forgiveness, restoring us into fellowship with the Father. Jesus lives and rules and reigns as King of Kings and Lord of Lords making certain that everything He died for – our transgressions, our iniquities, our peace, our sicknesses and our pains – is properly dealt with.
Jesus lives to enforce everything He died to accomplish and to provide it for those who have made Him Lord of their life. Although healing belongs to those for whom Jesus died and although Jesus lives right now and forevermore as Redeemer, Savior and Healer, we still have a role to play in our healings and our personal destiny. We need to become educated about how God interacts with people and what He expects from us. Understanding the role of sin and its destructive impact on our lives is imperative. Likewise, the importance of grasping the significance of who Jesus is in our lives and learning how to relate to Him cannot be overstated. If we will obediently follow God’s way to His healing life through Jesus Christ, we can expect to see sicknesses healed and diseases triumphed over.
