“God’s Word is Our Ultimate Authority”
E. Michal Gayer
“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.” (Isaiah 40:8)

Each one of us, in the course of our lives, must seek to discern truth and determine reality. Along the way we are invited to evaluate many possibilities and along the way we must decide who we will believe, whose voice will we follow. Choices must be made. Will we follow our own contrived imaginings and explanations about life or will we pursue the ideas of some person we know or perhaps some teacher? Who will we believe? Who can we trust to be the ultimate and final authority for what will shape our present circumstances, chart our future direction and determine our final destination? All people need to discover truth. We need to know what is real, permanent and lasting in order to build a stable reality-oriented life.
The task of finding an ultimate and final authority can be very daunting because of the many false options available in the course of a lifetime. The Bible, however, is quite clear and very specific along these lines. It plainly attests to the fact that final, ultimate authority lies within the Godhead. Truth is not only known by the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit and delivered to us through them but they are the ones from whom all truth originates and emanates. They are truth. I Timothy 3:15 calls God the “…Pillar and ground of the truth.” I John 5:6 says, “…the Spirit is truth” and in John 14:6 Jesus proclaims that He is, “…the way, the truth and the life.” Clearly, the Bible places the origin and source of truth within the eternal Godhead of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
The fact that truth originates and proceeds from God is absolute, but no less remarkable is the fact that God in His supreme wisdom and mercy has graciously chosen to reveal His truth to people. God has given a royal proclamation of truth through the words that He has spoken forth and through the revelations He has provided. God has seen fit to permit His words to be recorded for people to understand and utilize. He has made truth available for people to receive and benefit from as a guiding force in their lives.
Because truth flows forth from God, what He has spoken and recorded is made permanent through His integrity. Once God’s Word has gone forth, it doesn’t shift. It remains trustworthy and reliable forever. God has settled His Word to be unchanged for all time. Isaiah 40:8 states, “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.” And Psalm 119:89 from the Amplified Bible proclaims, “Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven [stands firm as the heavens].”
God’s Word is eternal because God’s trustworthy and just nature makes it impossible for Him to break His Word. God cannot lie. He is the ultimate authority. Psalm 138:2 makes this outstanding statement about God, “…You have magnified your word above all Your name.” That’s how much God stands behind His Word, His truth. He honors it even above His good name.
Healing is proclaimed by God in many places throughout the Bible. Knowing that God’s Word is truth and knowing that God cannot lie gives us great promise when we hear His Word say, “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases” (Psalm 103:2-3). Such declaration gives enormous assurance that God’s Word concerning healing is settled in heaven and is available here on earth.
