“God’s Word and the Narrow Gate”

E. Michal Gayer

“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14)

Jesus makes an awesome yet disquieting statement when He declares to all of us, as recorded in Matthew 7:13-14, “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” Although these verses are often interpreted specific to receiving eternal life, they are equally applicable to receiving divine healing because healing and salvation come by the same route.

It becomes imperative that we as individuals learn that there is a spiritual narrow gate, which hinges on the provisions Jesus made at the cross when He took our sins and bore our sicknesses. We must also learn to discipline ourselves to enter by faith into that narrow gate of truth and walk the sometimes difficult path of faith to appropriate salvation from sin and receive healing. When we discover and do what God requires, then we will be positioned to receive all that God has provided for us (Matthew 8:17). Healing, just as much as salvation from sin, has been made available through Jesus Christ but we must learn how to receive it from Him.

Although quite a bit is involved in learning how to relate to God and how to receive from Him, God has given full disclosure of all we need to know. That crucial information is found in the Word of God. Psalm 119:105 says of the Word of God, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”  The great intention of God in giving His written Word to the world is that it will be a lamp and a light to illuminate the path of faith we walk upon as we draw closer and closer to Him. The Word reveals to us that which only God knows, casting a light on the dark areas of knowledge otherwise hidden from mankind. It illuminates our path. It is a light to our feet enabling us to walk in God’s ways. The Word of God surely directs as Isaiah 30:21 says, “Whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left…your ears shall hear…” the Word of God saying, “This is the way…this is the way…not over there…over here…this is the way…walk in it.”

Most certainly the Word of God contains all of the signposts and directional markers that we need to bring us to God and His provision for us. These directional markers direct our feet along the “way” that Jesus set forth that we may live in good health, restoration and eternal life. In the next several devotional studies, we will continue this examination of how God works through His Word and the necessity for us to grasp a deep and sincere understanding of His Word especially as it pertains to healing.  For now, ponder your path in life and observe the “Light” of God’s Word as He leads you into your very best life.
