To consider the compassion and graciousness of our God quickens our spirits with hope and confidence so much so that where healing is concerned, it should be sufficient to know that God has revealed Himself as Jehovah-Rapha, “the Lord who heals you” (Exodus15:26). This knowledge about God is very heartening, but God, knowing our need for greater understanding, provided considerable supportive evidence to reassure us that healing is deeply embedded in His character and nature.

God gave powerful disclosure concerning this in the 34th chapter of Exodus. In this segment of history Moses, upon learning that the Children of Israel had made a golden calf to worship, broke the two stone tablets upon which God had written the Ten Commandments. Following this, God met again with Moses where He revealed important and essential qualities within His very own nature.

Exodus 34:4-7 (NIV) reads, “So Moses chiseled out two stone tablets like the first ones and went up Mount Sinai early in the morning, as the LORD had commanded him…Then the LORD came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the LORD. And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished…”

This remarkable disclosure, along with numerous other scripture passages, begins to reveal a picture of the awesome nature and character of God which supports and upholds the fact that our God is a mighty healer of people. In this and our next several devotional studies we will look at ten characteristics which relate to God as Healer starting with: (1) God is Spirit (2) He is one God in three Persons and (3) He is personal.

John 4:24 makes this statement, (1) “God is Spirit” and I Timothy 1:17 states that God who is “…the King eternal, immortal…” is also “invisible” meaning that God in His inmost essence is not seeable.  He is “invisible Spirit”. Although God is “invisible Spirit”, it does not mean He is without substance. It means God is of a substance that cannot be seen under natural conditions. God is not of our natural materiality. He is of heavenly materiality, a substance of the spirit realm. God is Spirit.

(2) The second quality of God is mostly beyond human understanding and must be grasped without reliance on natural proof and that is the fact that God has the supernatural quality of being ‘One Being’ and at the same time three Persons: the Persons of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. The first chapter of John identifies that Jesus existed with God before He became flesh and the 14th chapter of John powerfully references the Holy Spirit. These and other Bible references teach that there is one God in the distinct Persons of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

(3) The third essential characteristic is that God is personal. He is capable of being known in a personal “one on one” relationship. God is not a mere force or some abstract intelligence. He is living and He gives life. He has demonstrated through His Word that He is keenly interested in and wants to relate to people in a personal manner. God is personal!

These qualities of God powerfully relate to divine healing. It brings great comfort to know that God (1) is an infinite Spirit of a far superior substance then that of our natural realm. As Spirit, God is not subject to the limitations of our flesh nature. (2) It is also very reassuring when we understand that He is “one God” who reveals Himself and comes to us in the three Persons, of God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. By existing as three Persons, to whom we can relate on different levels, He gives us boundless opportunities to know and connect with Him. (3) That God desires to have a relationship with us enables us to be in vital contact with our Healer in a variety of personal ways.

It is heartening to know that God’s ways are beyond ours and that His thoughts are greater than our own. Since "His" capabilities lie far beyond our limitations, we have someone who is mightier than ourselves to appeal to in times of sickness and need. This encourages hope even when circumstances are extreme. We can rest with great security in our Healer, our Heavenly Father. Endless healing possibilities exist when we know God on this level. In our next devotional study we will observe several more qualities of God which powerfully support His work in human lives as our Healer.
